Svefi was founded in 1973 and was then run by The National Association for Finns in Sweden. The school is situated in Haparanda on the Finnish - Swedish border. The area is bilingual, which makes it possible to communicate both in Swedish and in Finnish. There are many courses to choose from, varying from two-day courses to those that last several years. The minimum age for admission to the folk high school is 18 years. Some special courses, such as music education, audio engineering, light design, interior design, art course and Performance Art have specific requirements for admission. Svefi organization is responsible for hosting during teachers exchanges visit. They will present music and language courses for adult and will demonstrate possibilities how to integrate music and language learning in adult education. Svefi will present Swedish, Finnish and English language learning and possible music (traditional songs, rhythms) tools improving language learning.
